It was a pleasure to welcome DEFRA Minister, Robbie Moore MP, to the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow last week. We heard about the science behind sustainable fishing, and the importance of this circular model which benefits local fishermen, restaurants, hoteliers, and more. The Hatchery is a brilliant example of successful collaboration between stakeholders and shows the importance to everyone of maintaining a healthy environment. My favourite fact from the Hatchery is that the survival rate for their lobsters upon release is about 20%, compared to the less than 1% you'd expect to see from wild breeding. Thanks again to the Minister for visiting, and to everyone at the Hatchery for hosting us.
I'm very grateful to the Premier League for funding £50,000's worth of new solar panels for Launceston FC. It recently funded the replacement of the grandstand roof, and in previous years has also supplied The Clarets with pitch maintenance equipment and a contribution to new changing rooms. Top-tier football must play its part in supporting our small clubs - they are the lifeblood of the sports - and I am grateful to the Premier League for doing so here in North Cornwall.
Last week I attended an event in Parliament marking World Cancer Day 2024, hosted by Cancer Research UK. Nearly 1 in 2 people in the UK will get cancer in their lifetime. It was useful to speak with Cancer Research UK staff, researchers, and campaigners to discuss how to speed up progress in preventing, diagnosing, and treating the disease. Incredible progress has been made in the fight against cancer and survival in the UK has doubled in the last 50 years, but there’s still much further to go. Many people who are diagnosed early have a very good chance of recovery, so I would urge you to make sure that if you feel something isn’t right, please get it checked out.
My office has now actioned over 65,000 individual cases on behalf of North Cornwall constituents. If you would like my help with a local issue, or discuss Government policy with me, I hold regular advice surgeries in person and online. Please contact me via scott@scottmann.org.uk or 01208 74337.
