On Friday I held meetings in Launceston with constituents during my regular surgery in the town. We discussed various issues including the new dental practice that is coming to the area, traffic issues, safety on the A30, and healthcare cases which I will be taking up directly with the NHS on behalf of constituents. I finished off the day by delivering my MP newsletter. It was great to hear positive feedback about the Autumn Statement on the doors.
With inflation falling, and global economic conditions stabilising, the Government is now able to take the long-term decisions required to strengthen the economy and unlock potential in North Cornwall. To ensure work always pays, the Autumn Statement for Growth cuts National Insurance Contributions for 29 million people and reforms the welfare system to toughen up work requirements, ensuring those in the welfare system are incentivised to work. To back business, we have announced full expensing will be made permanent. That means businesses have their taxes cut every time they invest in the UK; this is a £11 billion a year tax cut. We are also going further with the cost of living to support 1.6 million low-income families with an increase to their housing benefit and have announced the National Living Wage will be boosted by the largest ever cash increase, ending low pay and ensuring hard work is rewarded.
I also had lunch in town and then visited local businesses ahead of Small Business Saturday (2nd December) where there was a chance to discuss the business support brought forward in the Autumn Statement with many of North Cornwall’s small and medium enterprises. SMEs, which are companies with a turnover of less than £50m and no more than 250 employees, make up the bulk of our local economy. The cut in business rates announced by the Chancellor last week will also be very welcome in North Cornwall.
