Dear Members/Supporters,
There have been several challenging times during my time in the House of Commons and this past week was no exception. As you will no doubt be aware, the Prime Minister has resigned, citing that she does not have the support of the Parliamentary party to implement her mandate. I am sorry to see Mrs Truss leave her role as she is a good person with a genuine commitment to this country, but I appreciate that she has taken the advice of colleagues and decided this was the best course of action. I wish her and her family all the best for the future, and I know she will continue to be a strong voice for her constituents in South-West Norfolk.
Going forward there will be another leadership election within the Conservative Parliamentary Party, but at the time of writing, no candidates have declared publicly. I want to be clear with party members and North Cornwall constituents that my preference for leader will be based primarily on who has the best vision for rural and coastal communities like North Cornwall, and a pledge from the candidate to continue the levelling up agenda that we were elected to implement in 2019. Voters in North Cornwall were quite clear at the last election that they wanted to see constituencies like ours given our fair share of funding, resources, and attention from central government. We have already achieved success, for example, bringing per-pupil funding in North Cornwall up to the same level as schools in other parts of the country. I want to see this continue, and the pledge that I made to you in December of 2019 still stands; I will continue to fight hard for you and your family every day in Westminster to ensure the promises which were made at the last election are respected.
Despite all the round-the-clock media coverage of Westminster, the so-called ‘bubble’, the job of constituency work continues in the background. At last count, my office – which is a small team of five people - has actioned over 53,000 constituent cases since May 2015, with over 30,000 being dealt with since we returned after the last election. These cases range from requests for support with housing to complex cases from people who require my intervention with energy payments, to constituents stuck abroad needing help from the Foreign Office. The reason I mention this is because while national and international issues dominate the news, it’s the individual constituent in North Cornwall who needs help and support that is at the heart of everything I do.
Whether you voted for me or against me, support me or not, I represent everybody in North Cornwall. It is important that you know that when I vote for a leadership candidate in next week’s ballot these are priorities the candidate must demonstrate to me in exchange for my support. I will continue to update you as events move forward.
