This will be my final report back to North Cornwall of 2022 and what a year it has been. I am writing this the morning after the World Cup Final, which was an incredible match. My congratulations to Argentina on a fantastic win, despite a very strong comeback. Closer to home we have had an eventful year. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee brought joy to the whole country as we enjoyed an extended bank holiday weekend in her honour. Our celebration of the Queen’s incredible reign turned to sorrow at her passing just a few weeks later, but I was very proud of the way North Cornwall paid its respects. Despite her advanced age, it felt inconceivable that we would ever know a time when she was not with us. HM Queen Elizabeth II led this country by example throughout her seventy-year reign – her quiet dignity and strength of character will be greatly missed. She stood as a steadfast and reassuring presence in our lives at times of national tragedy and great triumph, and although many of us never had the honour of meeting her in person, it feels like we all knew her.
In Parliament, I have been very proud to be able to help deliver key legislation for the Home Office and Department of Justice. National Security issues have been an important part of my brief, which includes discussions with colleagues about their concerns, aspirations and what they would like to see included within proposed laws. The Whip’s Office is a very rewarding post within Government, and I have enjoyed my work this year immensely. Constituency matters take priority of course, and this year is the first since the pandemic that I have been able to schedule a full diary of face-to-face meetings and visits to businesses and people across North Cornwall. During the summer, my team and I also held several drop-in surgeries and stalls at the agricultural shows across the constituency and picked up a lot of action points to take back Westminster. My team also put together a special event for our guests from Ukraine and I was delighted to see how many of our local businesses donated their time and resources to give them a proper Cornish welcome. One of my final constituency visits this year was to the opening of the brand new Community Diagnostic Centre at Bodmin, giving North Cornwall its own CT, MRI and Ultrasound services for the very first time. I’m very proud of this and it was a brilliant way to round off the year.
I would like to end with a thank you to my team in Westminster and North Cornwall, who have helped to action almost ten thousand pieces of casework supporting people across the constituency from Bodmin to Launceston, and Camelford to Bude. My office has been busier than ever this year and I feel like North Cornwall is going from strength to strength. A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.
